My Favorite LGBTQ+ Holiday Films

As queer people, there aren’t a lot of holiday films that are geared towards our community. On top of that, there are barely any queer holiday movies that are well done. Luckily I’ve made a list of some movies that are tolerable.

Comedies

The Bitch Who Stole Christmas

If you’re a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race and the holidays, this is the holiday film for you. Filled with an assortment of hosts and competitors from RuPaul’s Drag Race, this comedy is the perfect way to make the yuletide gay. This film is about a workaholic big-city fashion journalist who is sent to a Christmas-obsessed small town, called Tuckahoe, to dig up a story and finds herself in the middle of a sinister plot that could destroy Christmas. If you love drag queens, tacky jokes and camp films, this is the movie for you. Streaming Service: Paramount+

Romance

Carol

If you’re a sapphic and haven’t watched this movie, I would be so surprised. The chokehold that this film has had on the sapphic community since it came out in 2015 is honestly warranted. Having Cate Blanchett play a lesbian was the answer to all of our prayers. The story line is very typical for a lesbian “period piece” IMDb described Carol as: “An adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's seminal novel The Price of Salt, Carol follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change.” I know that a lot of people think that this film is overrated, but it is very well made, the production is great (a lot better than other sapphic films) and I’m a sucker for a “coming out” story. Even though this is just a film that happens to take place during the holiday season, I still think this is a holiday film. It was also filmed in Cincinnati which gives it extra bonus points. A New York Christmas Wedding

It’s giving, a gay Christmas Carol. I actually kind of enjoyed this one, after looking past the subpar production. The story was cute and it confronts the struggle of heteronormativity, queer friendships and queer love.

Romantic Comedies

Single All The Way

I think I would rather eat my own toe nails that watch this film again. The only good part about it is that Jennifer Coolidge is in it. Streaming Service: Netflix

Happiest Season

No. Just, no. If you want to watch a queer movie that has all the wrong motives and a terrible person as the girlfriend, this is the film for you. Best parts are: Aubrey Plaza is gay, Dan Levy, cameo from Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme. But I’ll probably watch it again this holiday season just to get into a heated discussion about the whole concept of this film and how it REALLY should have ended. Streaming Service: Hulu

Christmas at the Ranch

This gave me the ick so many times. I honestly zoned out halfway through and started paying attention again towards the end and still feel like I watched the whole thing. Very predictable throughout the whole thing.
